About this Raddle

Barbara Jordan was elected to the Texas Senate in 1966, becoming one of the first Black people to serve there since Reconstruction. On March 28, 1972, she was elected president pro tempore of the Texas Senate, making her the first Black woman in America to preside over a legislative body. She went on to serve in the US House of Representatives, where she worked to expand the reach of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1994, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
